Maketane Air Strip is an airport in Lesotho, Africa, that extends to the edge of a cliff.
This airport is labelled as one of the world's scariest runways.
2. Madeira Airport, Portugal
Almost half of the runway consists of an extension supported by more than 150 concrete pillars. The runway was extended in 1980s after 131 people were killed when a Boeing plunged off the end of the runway.
The airport's shorter length, proximity to cliffs, extreme turbulence and poor weather conditions, makes it one of the world's most dangerous airports.
3. Tenzing-Hillary, Nepal
If a pilot misjudges landing or take off , they face a fall off a cliff edge. Also, it;s only a tenth of a standard length of a runway. There are no radar or navigation facilities available at the airport.
4. Saba Island Airport, Carribean
The runway is only 400m in length and is the shortest commercial airstrip in the world. One side of the strip has high hills while all the others drop into the sea.
5. Qamdo Bamda Airport, Tibet, China
The runway is more than 14,000 feet above mean sea level and 5,500 m in length.
At higher altitudes longer runways are needed because aircraft will require a much higher take-off and landing speed to compensate for reduced performance.
6. Barra Airport, Scotland
The airport is the only one in the world where the scheduled flights use the beach as this tiny runway disappears underwater during high tide.
7. Gibraltar International Airport, Europe
The runway is less than 2000m and is intersected by a main road. The traffic has to be halted every time a plane takes off or lands.
8. Paro Airport, Bhutan
The Himalayan airport is so dangerous that only eight pilots are qualified to land there. 18,000 foot mountains surrounding this airport and an unusually short runway makes take offs and landings very scary.
9. Princess Juliana International airport
Due to the limited length of the runway, only 2,300 metres, planes fly very low to touch down on the tiny runway. A sign at the end of the runway warns tourists that the blast from the jet's engines runway could knock them off their feet.
10. Courchevel Airport, France
This runway is extremely short with a gradient of 18.6%. There is no go-around procedures for landings, due to surrounding mountainous terrain. The airfield appeared in James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies.
