National teams that died in air crash

  • Zambia national football team,1993




    On 27 April 1993 a Zambian Air Force de Havilland Canada DHC-5D Buffalo crashed into the

    Atlantic Ocean about 500 metres offshore from Libreville, Gabon.
    The flight was carrying the Zambian national football team to a FIFA Worldcup Qualifier against Senegal in Dakar.
    All 25 passengers and 5 crew members were killed.
    An investigation into the accident concluded that the pilot had shut down the wrong engine after a fire. Pilot fatigue and an instrument error had contributed to the accident.

    US figure skating team,1961




    A Boeing 707 aircraft crashed en route to Brussels, Belgium, from New York city on February 15, 1961, killing the entire U.S. figure skating team on its way to World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
    All 72 on board were killed.
    It is the deadliest plane crash to occur on Belgian soil.

    US Olympic Boxing Team, 1980




    LOT Flight 7 crashed in Warsaw, Poland, on 14 March 1980, due to mechanical failure.
    All 87 crew and passengers died.

    Puerto Rico national women's volleyball team, 1970

    On February 15,1970 a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 crashed shortly after taking off from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic en route to Puerto Rico.
    The crash killed all 102 passengers and crew on board.

    Manchester United, UK, 1958



    Munich air disaster occurred on 6 February 1958 when British European Airways flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport, West Germany.
    Seven of the Manchester's United players died immediately.

    Locomotiv Yaroslavl, 2011




    On September 7, 2011 a Yak-Service Yakovlev Yak-42, carrying the players and coaching staff of the Locomotiv Yaroslavl professional ice hockey team crashed near the Russian city Yaroslavl.
    Of the 45 on board, only one survived.
